The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, Chief Eze Nwachukwu, on Tuesday, alleged that members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state were behind the killing and burning of homes in some communities in the state last week.
No fewer than 30 houses were reportedly razed after suspected political thugs on Friday attacked several communities in Izzi Local Government Area.
But the police on Monday confirmed that one person was injured and about six houses razed during the attacks.
The state Commissioner of Police, Awosola Awotunde, who condemned the attacks, appealed for calm.
He said the culprits and their “sponsors” would be arrested.
Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Loveth Odah, said the burnt houses bore the posters of both the PDP and APC.
Nwachukwu at a press conference on Tuesday in Abakaliki said the attacks were targeted at his party members.
He warned that his party would no longer tolerate any attacks on its members and urged the police to arrest and prosecute those behind Friday’s attacks.
He alleged that the senatorial candidate of the APC in Ebonyi South Senatorial District, Mr. Nweze Onu, was attacked by hoodlums adding that the party’s rallies were disrupted by suspected PDP thugs at Ebonyi, Onitcha, Ohaozara local government areas. He said the APC’s campaign office in Ohaozara was destroyed.
However, the state chairman of the PDP in the state, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, dismissed the allegations.
He said, “It is not true. They (APC) are the ones attacking our members. I briefed you journalists on the killing of two persons on Sunday. They were attacked by political thugs, while six others were injured.”
Nwebonyi, who did not provide the identities of the victims, however, decried the attacks and called for urgent action by relevant authorities.
