Amosun celebrates 61st birthday with over 5,000 senior citizens


The Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has played host to more than 5,OOO elderly from 70 years and above in the State, where he expressed his continued support for them, saying they deserved to be celebrated, treated with respect and dignity.

Amosun stated this at the 8th edition of the “Uplifting the Aged”, organised by the office of the Wife of the Governor, as part of activities commemorating his 61st birthday, at the Cultural Centre, Abeokuta.

The Governor explained that the State has experienced infrastructural development in the last seven and a half years and has also moved from 29th to its second position in the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in the country, thanking the people including past Governors for the support given his administration since 2011.

Welcoming guests to the occasion, his wife, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, lauded the exemplary leadership of her husband, as demonstrated through his commitment to the socio-economic development of the State and the people.

She added that the Governor’s compassion and love for the course of the vulnerable senior citizens in the State has contributed immensely to their well being and the elderly in turn had contributed their quotas to the development of the State.

The wife of the governor restated the Uplift Development Foundation and the state government’s commitment to the care and welfare of the aged, noting that she would not relent in her efforts at providing adequate care for the elderly by restoring their fundamental human rights.

According to her, “the programme was flagged off on the 25th of January, 2012, with 1000 vulnerable elders and needy aged, to commemorate the birthday of the Governor who has insisted that there should be no felicitations of any kind on his birthday”, adding that as of today, the beneficiaries have grown to more than 5000.

Presenting tips on health issues, the President of the Medical Women Association, Ogun State branch, Dr. Bola Adefuye, advised people from ages 40 and above to go for regular medical check up, to enable them know their health status, maintained a healthy life style through balanced diet and regular physical exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Mulikatu Akinremi and Mr. Samsideen Edalere, expressed satisfaction on the performance of the Governor, particularly the ongoing infrastructural work at the three Senatorial Districts of the State, praying for God’s guidance and protection for him, his family and the State in generally.

Highlights of the event include, free eye, dental and high blood pressure check, diabetes test among others, as well as presentation of birthday gifts, distribution of gift items and cash to beneficiaries, who were selected from the 20 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas and Non- Governmental Organisations in the State.
